Shampoo is shampoo.\u2019 Vets hear this all the time, and every time they despair. Using human shampoo on pets is one of the most common mistakes pet owners make. Let's look at <strong>why it's dangerous<\/strong>, and separate the facts from the myths.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth: shampoo is shampoo, it's all the same<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> human shampoo and pet shampoo are completely different formulas, made for different types of skin. They differ in almost every respect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pH level<\/li>\n<li>The type and concentration of surfactants<\/li>\n<li>Fragrances and their strength<\/li>\n<li>Preservatives<\/li>\n<li>Active ingredients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Comparing them is like comparing petrol and diesel: both are fuel, but putting one in instead of the other is a sure way to a breakdown.<\/p>\n<h2>Difference 1: pH level<\/h2>\n<p>This is the <strong>main<\/strong> and <strong>most dangerous<\/strong> difference.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Human skin pH:<\/strong> 4.5-5.5 (acidic)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dog skin pH:<\/strong> 6.2-7.4 (closer to neutral)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cat skin pH:<\/strong> 6.0 \u2013 7.0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Human shampoo is made for the acidic environment of our skin. When you apply it to an animal's skin, you <strong>artificially acidify<\/strong> an environment that should be closer to neutral. This destroys the <strong>acid mantle<\/strong> (the skin's natural protective barrier).<\/p>\n<p>The pH scale is logarithmic: a difference of 1 unit means a <strong>10-fold change<\/strong> in acidity. Human shampoo can be 100 times more acidic than the level a pet needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Difference 2: surfactants<\/h2>\n<p>Surfactants are what do the cleaning and create the lather. Human shampoos often use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)<\/strong> is a harsh surfactant that strips away oils very effectively<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)<\/strong> is slightly milder but still quite harsh<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Animal skin is <strong>thinner than human skin<\/strong> (in dogs, the epidermis is just 3-5 cells thick compared with 10-15 in humans). Aggressive surfactants that human skin can still cope with are too harsh for animal skin.<\/p>\n<p>Good-quality pet shampoos use <strong>mild cleansing agents<\/strong>, which clean effectively without destroying the skin's thin protective layer.<\/p>\n<h2>Difference 3: fragrances<\/h2>\n<p>People like their hair to smell of flowers, fruit or vanilla. But for pets, this is a real problem:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A dog's sense of smell<\/strong> is 10,000-100,000 times more sensitive than a human's<\/li>\n<li><strong>A cat's sense of smell<\/strong> is 14 times more sensitive<\/li>\n<li>The strong fragrances in human shampoos can cause <strong>stress, nausea and disorientation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Some aromatic ingredients (citrus and tea tree essential oils) are <strong>toxic<\/strong> to cats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pet shampoos use mild, subtle scents or no scent at all.<\/p>\n<h2>Difference 4: preservatives and additives<\/h2>\n<p>Human shampoos can contain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Parabens<\/strong> are potential endocrine disruptors<\/li>\n<li><strong>Artificial colourings<\/strong> can cause allergies in pets<\/li>\n<li><strong>Silicones<\/strong> (dimethicone) form a film on the coat that disrupts thermoregulation<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formaldehyde<\/strong> and its derivatives irritate pets' sensitive skin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pets also <strong>lick<\/strong> their coats, so whatever is left on the coat ends up inside their body. What is safe on a human head can be toxic once it reaches an animal's stomach.<\/p>\n<h2>Real consequences: what vets see<\/h2>\n<p>Veterinary dermatologists regularly see patients with problems caused by unsuitable products.
